Survey on Ageism Now Closed
The Office of the Seniors Advocate Survey on Ageism is now closed. Please note that we will continue to accept survey responses that were sent to the office by mail and may have been delayed by the Canada Post strike.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. The perspectives and experiences you shared will provide valuable insight into the issue of age discrimination in B.C. These findings will help inform the future work of our office.
We look forward to sharing the results of the survey with you after completing a detailed analysis of responses in the coming months.
About the Survey on Ageism
The Office of the Seniors Advocate launched a survey on ageism in November 2024 to learn more about how age discrimination is affecting the lives of people in B.C. We invited British Columbians to complete a short, anonymous survey to share their perspectives and experiences. The survey closed on December 13, 2024.
What is ageism?
The World Health Organization defines ageism as “…the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or ourselves based on age.”
Studies on ageism report that it occurs most often in the workplace, health care, the media, and the legal system. Ageism can impact an older person’s self-worth, independence, safety, mental and physical health, social life and even financial well-being.
